Evan’s early work consisted mostly of photomontages and mural paintings. His large-scale watercolours and gouaches date from 1967 onwards, and many of them were exhibited at the series of solo exhibitions held at the Redfern Gallery from 1979. The influence of Edward Burra is obvious, but Evans’ work remained highly distinctive and the subject matter  contemporary.

Evan’s early work consisted mostly of photomontages and mural paintings. His large-scale watercolours and gouaches date from 1967 onwards, and many of them were exhibited at the series of solo exhibitions held at the Redfern Gallery from 1979. The influence of Edward Burra is obvious, but Evans’ work remained highly distinctive and the subject matter  contemporary. The landscape of Suffolk, where Evans lived, bears no relation to this curiously titled surrealist landscape, the inspiration for which is more likely to be imagined than observed.

in a water-filled pit overlooked by a large tree; then you notice that the
whole countryside is painted in shades of khaki. There’s an acute feeling
that the landscape is more intelligent than its owners’ (Sunday Telegraph,

Although Evans lived in Suffolk his landscapes often bear no relation to his native territory.
